Mark 4:26-27 NIV
“He also said, ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.’”
God Works in the Unseen Places
Jesus told a simple but powerful parable about a man who scatters seed on the ground. After he plants the seed, life begins to happen beneath the surface. The man sleeps and wakes, goes about his days, and yet the seed continues to grow.
He does not fully understand how it happens.
He cannot see every movement underground.
He cannot force the seed to become a harvest overnight.
But still, the seed grows.
This parable reminds us of a comforting truth:
God is always working, even when we cannot see it.
So much of spiritual growth happens in hidden places. Before there is visible fruit, there are unseen roots. Before there is a harvest, there is a season of waiting. Before there is evidence on the outside, God is often doing deep work on the inside.
Many of us want to see immediate results. We pray and want instant answers. We obey and want quick confirmation. We trust God but still wonder why the breakthrough is taking so long.
But Jesus reminds us that the Kingdom of God often grows quietly, gradually, and mysteriously. It does not always announce itself with noise. It does not always happen according to our schedule. Sometimes, the most important work God is doing is the work no one can see yet.
The Hidden Work of Growth
A seed does not look impressive when it is first planted. It is small. It disappears beneath the soil. From the surface, it may seem as if nothing is happening at all. But beneath the ground, life is beginning to awaken.
Roots are forming.
Strength is developing.
The seed is breaking open.
Growth is beginning in darkness before it ever appears in the light.
This is often how God works in our lives. We want fruit, but God begins with roots. We want answers, but God builds trust. We want visible change, but God may first be shaping our character, healing our wounds, renewing our minds, and strengthening our faith in places no one else can see.
There are seasons when we may feel buried. We may feel forgotten, hidden, delayed, or overlooked. We may wonder if our prayers are making any difference.
We may ask, “Lord, are You doing anything at all?”
Yet the parable of the growing seed gives us hope. The farmer does not know exactly how the seed grows, but it grows. He cannot see the hidden process, but the process is still real. He cannot control every detail, but growth is still taking place.
In the same way, we do not have to understand everything God is doing in order to trust that He is working.
Waiting Does Not Mean God Is Absent
One of the hardest parts of faith is learning to wait. Waiting can feel like silence. Waiting can feel like delay. Waiting can feel like nothing is changing.
But in God’s hands, waiting is never wasted.
There are prayers that seem unanswered right now, but that does not mean God has ignored them. There are dreams that seem delayed, but that does not mean God has denied them. There are areas of your heart that still feel tender, but that does not mean healing is not happening.
Sometimes God’s work is like a seed beneath the soil. It is hidden, slow, and sacred.
He may be teaching you patience.
He may be deepening your dependence on Him.
He may be removing what cannot remain.
He may be preparing you for something you are not yet ready to carry.
He may be strengthening roots so that when fruit comes, you will be able to sustain it.
We often measure God’s activity by what we can see. But God is not limited to the visible. He works in hearts, conversations, circumstances, timing, and details we may never fully understand.
The fact that you cannot see progress does not mean there is no progress.
The fact that you cannot feel change does not mean God is not changing you.
The fact that the harvest has not appeared does not mean the seed is dead.
Buried is not the same as dead. Sometimes buried means planted.
The Farmer’s Faithful Part
In the parable, the man scatters the seed. That is his part. He plants what he has been given. Then he continues with the rhythm of life. He sleeps and rises, night and day, while the seed grows.
This teaches us something important about faith. There is a part we are called to do, and there is a part only God can do.
The farmer can scatter the seed, but he cannot make life happen inside it.
He can prepare the ground, but he cannot command the roots to grow.
He can wait and watch, but he cannot force the harvest overnight.
In our lives, we are called to be faithful with what God has placed in our hands. We can plant seeds of prayer. We can plant seeds of obedience. We can plant seeds of kindness, forgiveness, generosity, worship, and truth.
But we must also trust God with the growth.
This is where many of us struggle. We want to plant the seed and immediately see the fruit. We want to pray once and receive the answer. We want to obey today and see the breakthrough tomorrow. We want to surrender and instantly feel peace.
Sometimes God does work suddenly. But often, He works steadily.
Faithfulness means continuing to plant good seed even when we do not see immediate results.
It means praying again.
It means opening Scripture again.
It means choosing hope again.
It means forgiving again.
It means serving again.
It means trusting God again, even when the ground still looks unchanged.
The hidden life of the seed reminds us that our job is not to control the harvest. Our job is to remain faithful to the One who brings the harvest.
When You Feel Unseen
There are moments in life when we feel unseen by people. We may be quietly carrying burdens no one knows about. We may be serving faithfully without recognition. We may be praying in private, grieving in silence, or fighting battles that never appear on the outside.
But God sees what others miss.
He sees the tears you wipe away before anyone notices.
He hears the prayers you whisper when you have no strength left.
He knows the obedience that costs you something.
He notices the faithfulness no one applauds.
He is present in the quiet places, the hidden places, the waiting places, and the painful places.
Jesus often spoke of the Father who sees in secret. God is not only present in public victories. He is present in private surrender. He is present when your faith feels fragile. He is present when growth feels slow. He is present when the only thing you can do is keep trusting Him for one more day.
If you feel unseen today, be encouraged: you are not hidden from God.
What feels invisible to others is fully known by Him.
Trusting the Process of Spiritual Growth
Spiritual growth does not always happen in dramatic moments. Sometimes it happens slowly, through ordinary faithfulness.
A small daily prayer.
A verse read with a tired heart.
A moment of worship in the middle of worry.
A choice to respond with grace instead of anger.
A decision to keep believing when life feels uncertain.
These may seem small, but small seeds matter. Over time, God uses them to form deep roots within us.
We may not notice growth day by day, just as we do not always notice a plant growing by staring at it. But over time, something changes. Our peace becomes steadier. Our trust becomes deeper. Our reactions become softer. Our hope becomes stronger. Our hearts become more anchored in Christ.
This is the quiet miracle of God’s work in us.
The seed grows, though we do not know how.
Faith grows, though we cannot always explain how.
Healing comes, though we may not see every step.
Hope rises, even after a long season of waiting.
God is faithful to complete the work He begins.
Do Not Dig Up What God Is Growing
Sometimes in our impatience, we are tempted to “dig up the seed” to see if it is growing. We overthink. We worry. We try to control outcomes. We compare our growth to someone else’s. We question whether God is moving because we cannot yet see fruit.
But seeds need time beneath the soil. Constantly digging them up interrupts the process.
In the same way, some things in our lives need to be surrendered and left in God’s hands. We can pray. We can obey. We can seek wisdom. We can take faithful steps. But we must resist the urge to control what only God can grow.
There are some answers that will come in time.
There are some doors that will open in time.
There are some relationships that will heal in time.
There are some dreams that will mature in time.
There are some parts of your heart that God is restoring in time.
Trust does not mean we understand the process. Trust means we believe God is good in the process.
Your Unseen Season Is Not Wasted
If you are in a hidden season right now, hold on to this truth: your unseen season is not wasted.
God wastes nothing.
He does not waste your waiting.
He does not waste your tears.
He does not waste your obedience.
He does not waste your prayers.
He does not waste the quiet days when all you can do is keep going.
What looks like delay may be preparation. What feels like silence may be deep formation. What seems hidden may be holy ground.
The growing seed reminds us that God is not inactive just because we cannot see movement.
He is working beneath the surface, producing growth that will appear in its proper time.
So keep planting.
Keep praying.
Keep trusting.
Keep walking with God.
Keep believing that His Word is alive and His promises are true.
In the Kingdom of God, hidden seeds become visible harvests. Quiet obedience becomes lasting fruit. Waiting becomes testimony. And what God grows in the unseen places will one day reveal His faithfulness.
A Prayer for the Unseen Season
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for working in ways I cannot always see or understand. Help me trust You in the hidden places, in the waiting seasons, and in the quiet moments when it feels like nothing is changing.
Lord, grow my faith beneath the surface. Strengthen my roots in Your Word. Teach me to keep planting prayer, obedience, hope, and trust, even when I do not yet see the fruit.
Remind me that my waiting is not wasted and my unseen obedience matters to You. Help me rest in Your timing and believe that You are bringing growth in the places I cannot see.
Thank You for being faithful in every season.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
