Called To Tremendous Courage

Matthew 16:24 (NIV®)
"Jesus said to his disciples, 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.'"
Following Jesus has never been about convenience—it's about courage.
When Jesus spoke these words, His disciples knew exactly what "taking up your cross" meant. It was the Roman symbol of execution, shame, and ultimate surrender. Jesus wasn't inviting them to a comfortable faith—He was calling them to a courageous one.
Throughout Scripture, God's people have faced extraordinary challenges when they answered His call:
Noah spent decades building an ark while his neighbors ridiculed him—until the rain began to fall
Moses confronted the most powerful ruler on earth, knowing full well it would lead to conflict and danger
David was anointed as a shepherd boy, yet faced giants, exile, and years of waiting before stepping into his calling
Each one had to deny their own comfort, set aside their plans, and trust God completely.
And the same is true for us today.
As Christians in this generation, we carry responsibilities that will inevitably bring challenges. We are called to:
Be salt and light in a culture that often rejects biblical truth
Speak truth with love when silence would be easier
Live differently even when it costs us acceptance, comfort, or opportunity
This kind of faith isn't passive. It requires tremendous courage—the kind that only comes from knowing that God is with us, that His purposes are worth it, and that His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
Following Jesus well means choosing Him over our own desires, our reputation, and even our safety. It means trusting that the cross we carry today leads to resurrection tomorrow.

THINK ABOUT IT
The Christ-follower's life is about following the Lord with courage and a resolve to live with determined and unwavering faith.
This week, consider:
Where is God asking me to step out in faith, even though it feels uncomfortable or risky?
What am I holding onto that I need to surrender so I can follow Him more fully?
Who in Scripture inspires me to live with greater courage—and what can I learn from their example?
